MOON
july 16th - word of the day - "moon"
playlist
happy 40th anniversary, apollo 11!
too many youtubes, not enough time YOUS GUYS
i just want to salute that round disc in the sky that gives us light on days when it's shinin' bright. tonights a new moon, so we'll have to bow to it all yoga-style once it comes back.
THE best thing i can recommend to any of you who love short stories is this:

italo calvino's cosmicomics. the first chapter is a tiny story about the moon's gravitational pull being so close that humans used to climb ladders to the bottom of the moon and catch moon milk. its a fantastic read and one of my all-time faves, especially pertaining to this word of the week we call "moon."
i dont exactly have a song o' the week, but ill leave you with the sculpture of the week?! same thing... purdy much...

this is by bruce nauman, titled my name as though it were written on the surface of the moon, 1968. neon sign. how appropriate, since apollo 11 was just a year later!
and, so wait, we did have an artist of the week on word play-- RAHIM QUAZI! he's a singer/songwriter from the DFW area, and he actually suggested the word of the day be "moonlight." little did you all know that rahim himself has some songs with material covering the ole satellite in the sky, so i hope you all enjoyed the "apollo" and "she talks to moonlight" songs! check him out if youre ever in the dallas / grapevine area-- it is HIGHLY highly wordplay-recommend. stamp of approval GRADE A MEAT.
thats alls i got for this week,

( ) & ? !
july 9th- word of the day : " ? & ( ) ! "
playlist
THE AMPERSAND : &
check out that treat for all you type nerds out there! shoutout to my friend claude, a fantastic graphic designer who loves the ampersand like anyone else.
i hope you guys dug the symbols/punctuation word of the day! it was a different way of working here at word play since ive never found songs in the caliber i did for the ?!&() show!
an UPDATE!
the octopus project is incredible live. just wanted to put that out there-- what a great 4th of july that was seeing them and wooden birds (EXCELLENT too ps) and explosions in the sky. no fireworks though, austin texas. come on!
the word play song of the week is YEASAYER's "TIGHTROPE" -- it is tiiiiight! i found it on sirius's XMU channel but realized, well hey its on that one Dark Was The Knight compilation album. check it outtttt!! im gonna try to make a song of the week since its exciting to put up new stuff youre dying to tell everyone about.
DAN DEACON and DEERHUNTER are taking a collaborative tour right now (as of late, they're only in the east coast and new york area) where they are playing eachothers' songs and singing together. HOLY COW. those two are two of the best live shows ive seen, EVER, so together? who wants to hop a plane and go see them play in chicago in august?? im sure there will be some ACL action since the both of them are lined up for the festival, but.... theres never a time when the windy city sounds like a bad idea!
kat, my fellow co-host who is on leave for the summer and NEEDS TO COME BACK ASAP, and i are going to start up a video blog on this here site pretty soon, so in a couple of weeks be ready to see some hilarious off-air action with your word play gals. continuing on the music and words are what we at word play are here for, SO!
other than that, i got nothing. enjoy the ampersand / exclamation / question mark / parentheses show!
ill leave you with this: SONG O THA WEEK BALLERS!
much love and sweat,
kellen

come in captain, server's down.
uh....
sorry everyone.
its been almost three or four weeks or something like that since our streaming server has been shot down. MOTHERLINE.
so if youve been one of the many listeners that cant stream off our site and are pulling your hair out-- just be comforted in the mere fact that IM RIGHT THERE WITH YOU and that we are holding comforting group sessions every thursday after the show until this mega cajunga uber glitch in our webmastery department gets its hiccups out. ill bring the ginger ale if you bring some croissants and or cookies :)
pero,
until then, i will still be posting the shows in mp3 format after the fact, so you can still get your word play fix on FRIDAY, just not live with all the fun and shenanigans on the 89.9 air wave.
anyone know a guy who could do a thing with my main guy, tony?
cheers worders,
kellen

repeat
july 2nd - word of the day - "repeat"
playlist

SO CATS AND DOGS!
its word plays COVER SHOW part deux.
kat and i had a marrrrvelous covers show in the spring (if that strikes your fancy, listen here). i, of course, HAD to repeat the word of the day "repeat" since, to be frank, there are so many covers out there floating in cyberspace. i hope you all enjoyed, are enjoying, or will enjoy.
what was the first cover song in your memory? my father (who, as i will write time and again, schooled me in music appreciation from the time i could hear music) revealed to me that the one aerosmith song i knew so well in the 80s was IN FACT a beatles song orignally on abbey road. when i was a yee young gal growing up in the suburbs, trying to make 4-track mix tapes of my newly-acquired guitar skills, i first covered "hide your love away."
covers are such a great sub-category of the music universe! here's a fun one-- ben folds covering "bitches aint shit" by dr. dre. i saw this live myself and definitely should share.
and speaking of live, there are some GREAT live shows coming up! i myself will be seeing the octopus project and explosions in the sky on 4th of july and will for sure come back here to give a little review of the show. ALSO!
-next wednesday, july 15th -- tortoise is playing at the mohawk THEN the dirty projectors are playing at red 7 -- CHECK IT OUT if you can since red 7 is such a tiny place and im sure dirty projectors will rock that space out!
-next thursday, july 16th -- the blue hit and the river hymn will be playing at san marcos's triple crown. let me tell you, i had the blue hit play in my own backyard last year and was blown away by this 3-piece band with a cello and amazing lady vocalist. ive yet to see the river hymn but know the female vocalist and know her pipes are fantastic also, so all you san martians should absolutely check that out.
thats all i got for this week!
thanks for tuning in, and dont forget that next week's word of the day is up for suggestions! email me your ideas for a word at ktswwordplay@gmail.com and you might get your word played!

road
june 25th - word of the day - "road"
playlist
so as you all have heard...
the king of pop died on thursday.
i actually read the news 3 minutes before i went on air, so if i sounded a little out-of-sorts on the show, its just because i was shocked... and saddened.. and never put on the spot like that, ever.
i'm not here to put a personal stance on what i think of michael jackson's personal life. all im here for is the music. i cant tell you one family member, friend or acquaintance i know of who has a record collection without thriller. i grew up with thriller as my first LP in my collection... imagine a 6 year old with bows in her hair, wearing all things purple and putting the needle on "beat it" (my favorite song at that time in my life) with my fisher price record player. no joke... from back in the day of my childhood til now, ive always enjoyed hearing michael jackson's killer voice mixed beautifully by non other than my main man, quincy jones. now, as such a huge fan of dance parties and the like, i cant think of hosting get-togethers involving a dance floor and not hearing "P.Y.T." or "billie jean." michael was a fundamental start in my love for music, and i owe him at least a "get it, MJ" in this here music blog because of him.
besides that, the word of the day was, indeed, "road." it's that time of year where all i want to do is get in my car and drive on the open road. does anyone crave the open road as much as i do? when im having a hectic period in my life, there's always a dire need of a road trip. lately ive been frequenting myself with this idea of going west... whether that be to fredericksburg for a day, to the davis mountains for a weekend, to the pacific ocean on highway 1 in two weeks... the possibilities are as endless as the highways. certain songs bode well with this feeling of endless driving and the road trip, in fact, some songs scream "road trip" so loud that i wonder if the musician recorded in a moving vehicle. the era of the jetsetter is definitely here, and not that i have anything against flying to and from destinations, there is just something magical about slowing down and speeding down I-10 for 8 hours instead of flying it in 1. you take things in differently when you have to drive the entire way. i just got back from a road trip all the way to washington state and portland, and i would have never known about california's delicious cherries and farm-grown avocados had i not seen a sign off the side of the highway and exited. i would have never seen the border of oregon and california with my own eyes-- literally, you cross california's beautiful brown hills and mahogany redwoods and POOF! you're suddenly in oregon, and everything is green. i could go on and on and on....
but, needless to say, road trips and its soundtracks to accompany the moving scenery on the dash are what keep me sane. and to keep you all sane, im sharing the moonwalk with friends, family, and fans:
anyone want to get together and learn the entire dance to thriller? im sure this is being done in the millions right as we speak...
thank you all for listening and reading and supporting radio and music!
keep it wordy,
